It's about 4 pm, and I'm at work, with nothing to do. This is a frequent occurrence. A few of you know that I'm in an unusual situation vis a vis work. My company was acquired last year and is shutting down at the end of this year. I'm one of a small group of people who have "enhanced severance", essentially a stay bonus. So while my workload has dwindled to nearly nothing, and I'm bored witless, I need to stay until the end. Some days I'm busy, some days are like today, when blogging and commenting are the only things I have to do. (Some of you are going to need to post more frequently. 3 times daily would be ideal.)
This is not a complaint. Sitting in an office with nothing to do can be miserable, but there are far worse things. If my workload was what it was a year ago, I don't think I'd even have thought of starting a blog, and school would be more complicated, too (when I'm not blogging or working, I'm studying).
While I'm sitting here, a few comments to a few coworkers:
1. A, B, C, D, and E: Turn off the cell phones. We all have phones on our desks. If your argument is that you must have your phone on in case someone in your family needs to reach you, I will refer you again to the phone on your desk. Private extension and everything! Special note to D: Choose something other than "Hey Ya" for your ringtone or that phone is going to end up in a place which was not designed to accomodate it.
2. A: Your belief that your dog is capable of noticing and commenting on slight changes in your home is utterly charming. Really though, if you've moved a framed print from one wall to the other, and he happens to bark, those two events are entirely unrelated. He's just barking. Because he's a dog.
